Travel Nurse FAQ

Although requirements vary by facility, the standard requirement is a minimum 1 year of recent specialty experience, preferably in a Hospital/Acute Care setting.

You may travel to any state you are licensed in. If you are interested in traveling to a state you are not licensed in, we can help! Some states are fast licensing states and others may take weeks or months. Your recruiter can help you set up a game plan to get you were you want to go!

A standard travel contract is 13 weeks. Prior to the end of your contract, you may request an extension or decide you want to explore another contract somewhere else. It’s completely up to you!

Stipends is another word for “reimbursements.” In travel staffing industries, the term is often used to describe tax free pay for meals and housing. In a travel pay package, a portion of your pay is taxable and another portion is the tax-free stipends. In order to be considered a traveler, you generally must travel at least 50 miles from your tax home.

A travel contract locks you in for 13 weeks and guarantees the Travel Nurse a specific amount of hours per week. The guaranteed hours are usually three (3) 12hr shifts, four (4) 10hr shifts or five (5) 8hr shifts per week.

PRN means “per diem.” A PRN nurse is not locked into a contract and can choose what days they want to pick up shifts. Typically the facility will let the agency know on a daily basis if there are shifts available and the agency will reach out to their pool of PRN nurses to see who is available to pick up shifts.

Yes! This is very common. Nurses like to know they are guaranteed a specific number of shifts from their contract but love to be able to pick up additional shifts on their day off!

If you know you are ready to travel, or will be soon, we recommend you fill out an application so that you are prepared to seize the right opportunity. If you decide to apply well in advance of when you’d like to travel, we’ll keep your information on file and stay in touch until you are ready.

Housing

As we mentioned on our video, we do not provide Housing (because we'd rather pay you higher!). But that does not mean that we have no resources for you. Here are some Housing sites for Travelers that we highly recommend:

Airbnb allows people to list their own homes for rent. You can search to rent an entire home, just a room, or even share a room with someone. Airbnb features reviews/ratings and in-depth descriptions. You can also filter for your budget. Rentals tend to cost less for lengthier stays. Airbnb hosts can be an awesome resource to get acquainted with a new city!

Bring Fido assists in the search for pet-friendly options in the area of your choosing. There are various tabs at the top for pet-friendly lodging, airlines, and restaurants.

This Facebook community is perfect for all of our social-media savvy travelers as a resource to connect with other travelers across the country. This particular link will take you to the Travel Nurse Housing Group, which is a collaborative forum regarding finding housing as a traveler.

Furnished Finder finds furnished options in the area of your choosing and covers move-in costs such as deposits. We also have a discount with this company! On the site, click on “Travelers”. Choose Mynela from the drop-down menu as your staffing agency for a discount on their fee.

Walkscore is a website and mobile app that focuses on the walkability/bikeability of listings. You can plug in any address and it will produce a walk-score and bike-score for that location, plus a description. The higher the score, the easier it is to have a walking (or biking) lifestyle in that area.

Hotel Engine has given us an account in which you can search and book hotels at a discounted price! All you need to do is click the link, follow the requested steps, and then you will have full range to navigate the platform and start booking.
